Mario Quagliariello, Director of the Economic Analysis and Statistics Department at the European Banking Authority (EBA), will engage with Edoardo Lombella, Head of NPL Portfolio Disposals at Banco BPM, and Marco Lamandini, Professor of Commercial Law at University of Bologna, on the current situation of European banks.

The EBA’s Risk Analysis Unit is responsible for monitoring market trends and identifying risks and vulnerabilities in the banking sector, in addition to developing the methodology for the EU-wide stress test as well as for coordinating the execution of the exercise. The Unit actively carries out thematic studies on EU banks and leads the annual supervisory benchmarking of banks' internal models. 

Our panelists will discuss current guidelines for non-performing loans (NPLs), the upcoming stress tests and recent regulatory issues related to the European Banking Union. A Q&A on the topics will follow.

Director of the Economic Analysis and Statistics Department - European Banking Authority

Mario Quagliariello is currently Director of the Economic Analysis and Statistics Department at the European Banking Authority. The Economic Analysis and Statistics Department is in charge of the analysis of risks and vulnerabilities in the EU banking sector as well as of the stress testing function at the EBA. The Department also has central responsibility for the statistical tasks throughout the EBA, including data dissemination. In addition, the Department centralises the economic analysis activities of the EBA focusing on ex-ante and ex-post impact assessments of regulatory and supervisory measures as an independent analytical function. He previously served as a Senior Economist in the Regulation and Supervisory Policies Department of Banca d’Italia and has been the Italian central bank’s representative in a number of international working groups dealing with financial stability issues at the ECB, CEBS, IMF and the Basel Committee for Banking Supervision.

Edoardo Lombella is responsible for the disposals of non-performing assets at Banco BPM, where he has been previously in charge of managing NPLs and the reorganisation of the workout department. Before joining Banco BPM, he worked in M&A at Centrobanca and in Debt Restructuring at EY.
